I think it is some bug in the kernel. This was a 32bit kernel compiled
with make allnoconfig, and then slowly switching things on, while
reducing kernel size with CONFIG_EMBEDDED. 

It works with the full blown kernel. This was only happening with the
slimmed down kernel that needed to fit in 8MBit BIOS.

I'm also getting an error message that kexec can't relocate reset_vga
with that kernel. 

Weird. But the system is up and running again, so I guess it doesn't
matter.
