You need the data sheets for (northbridge and) southbridge, as well as 
possibly schematics of the board used. Not sure if there is a specific 
"Bios Writers Guide" for the ATI chipset you are using. There is a "Bios 
and Kernel Developers Guide" for AMD64 from AMD which is an excellent 
document, but it covers (mostly) AMD chipsets only
