If you buy a Tivo, you have a right to get a copy of the software and you 
can. But, I'm told, if you modify it in any way...it will not run. That's 
Tivoization.

It is not so different than a motherboard which might be 'bricked' if you 
modify the BIOS.

GPLV3 prevents this kind of practice.
