so who puts exactly the same chunk of code in all the 50-or-so network 
drivers (not to speak of all the other devices that might be flashable) 
and maintains it?

 From a maintenance perspective, this proposal is a nightmare - in this 
case, just unloading the driver is preferred imho.
Hmm.. I'm not sure how the suspend stuff works on linux, but maybe you 
could fake a suspend signal to the driver from your driver, so it 
detaches properly (and can attach again once you're done)?
