It is possible to swap flash chips while your computer is running, yes.
The term is called hot-swapping, here are some mini-articles to get you

Fact: the board is well beyond its economical life cycle. Opinion: IMO

Those scenarios only happen when you mess up^W^W don't put any thought in
handling the hardware.
