This page contains a series of potential candidates for a new Long-Term SUpport laptop.

Requirements:

RYF-certifiable

All blobs can be replaced with reasonable effort. The project does not have to start out RYF, but it must be possible to replace RYF-offending components (blobs) in a reasonable timeframe. For example, a VGA BIOS could be replaced with native init, whereas ME firmware cannot. All Intel-based systems are disqualified on this basis.

Sturdy

Won't come apart in the first years of use. It must be built to last.

Long shelf-life

Expected to be manufactured in large quantities, sold for at least 2 years. The idea is that there should be a large number of these systems around for years to come.

Cool factor

Must be attractive enough as a piece of hardware to attract users. It must be more than just a novelty item, and should serve reasoably well as a day-to-day laptop.

Rating system

Beefiness:

  • Beefy: Expected to have great performance and responsiveness
  • Bacony: Expected to have reasonable performance
  • Grinded: Expected to be usable; possibly outperforms chromebooks
  • Vegetarian: Expected to be have chromebook-like performance.

(*) NRBSPU is a Normalized Relative BS Performance Unit, which shall be taken to represent a non-scientific relative performance number between CPUs. It's most likely worthless.

Possible issues

Exynos CPUs

These CPUs use a PowerVR graphics core. The specification is closed and there are currently no free drivers for the graphics part.

AMD APUs

The integrated graphics processors in these APUs require non-free microcode to work. It is unclear if the display can function without such microcode.
